Primary School Access Project

During the second year of my degree we had the opportunity to work with the Access project, working with a primary school in the Dublin 8 area for a couple of weeks to complete a project.
"NCAD Access aims to support the primary school visual art curriculum through developing projects that underpin the work of teachers in the classroom and where possible incorporating the six strands of Drawing, Paint and Colour, Print & Clay, Construction and Fabric & Fibre.
Every year NCAD Access design and deliver a two-week primary school project that introduces primary school children to the college through participation in issue based art and design projects.  These projects focus on contemporary issues and themes..." NCAD Access Project
The theme that year was "Changing Landscapes" I chose to explore seasons, and made up a project for the pupils which was written up in the form of a scheme of work with lesson plans at a level suitable for their age group. Two umbrellas were produced (one 5th and one 6th class) as the finished piece for this project. In groups a story was made for each season, the umbrellas were then paper maché, painted white, the story was then written on and decorated. As well as the art side of the project there were also class discussions on the topic, and it was related back to the theme of Changing landscapes. Finally the pupils each took a rain drop which displayed their name on one side and on the other they wrote their favourite season and why, or what they had learnt from the project.
