NCAD Graduate Exhibition 2012

NCAD Graduate Exhibition 2012

‘Where’s Kublon?’
My work was based on a personal reflection, it describes a journey of self-discovery, through identity and location. The work is sited around the three places which I am connected to; London, Kerry, and Dublin.
Initial research began with photographing the relevant areas of concern, this helped in the exploration of ideas as did using Photoshop as an editing tool and as a means of creating new images.
Transfer printing created a base for the finished pieces and allowed for the introduction of paint, and experimenting with both opaque and transparent glazes.
Colour was especially important in my work, as it was in contrast to the seriousness of the black and white imagery from the photography. The pop of colour came from paint and glazes used. These conflicting elements show the different sides of my personality.
As a final exhibition we build up a series of work during studio practise, where we were split into two mediums either paint or ceramics. Up until this point my work had been manly computer graphics based, so when I selected paint out of the two options for my final exhibition I made it my own and used graphics in the way I could... through my manipulation of my own photography.

Teaching Practise:
Teaching practise in my final year although demanding, was also very rewarding. Those three years changed me as a person and gave me more confidence than I ever had before attending NCAD. I got to teach a wider variety of schemes in my last year due to the length of time on teaching practice. This was a great opportunity to develop my skills. I had the opportunity to work in some great schools which I am very grateful for, and learnt from my time at each of them.

Reflection:
I found my time at NCAD very challenging but just as rewarding. I learnt so much during this course from Teaching Practice, Studio Practice, and modules such as Digital Media, VAC’s, and History of Art. My most rewarding experience was the time spent at Stewart’s Hospital, the client’s appreciation of art and love for the subject was massively encouraging.
I have grown hugely in confidence during my time at NCAD and it was a massive personal development.
